âOne of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, âWhat commandment is the foremost of all?â Yeshua answered, âThe foremost is, âHEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD; AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTHâ [Deuteronomy 6:4-5]. The second is this, âYOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELFâ [Leviticus 19:18]. There is no other commandment greater than these.â The scribe said to Him, âRight, Teacher; You have truly stated that HE IS ONE, AND THERE IS NO ONE ELSE BESIDES HIM [Deuteronomy 6:4]; AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL THE STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONEâS NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF [Deuteronomy 6:5; Leviticus 19:18], is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.â When Yeshua saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him, âYou are not far from the kingdom of God.â After that, no one would venture to ask Him any more questions. And Yeshua began to say, as He taught in the temple, âHow is it that the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David? David himself said in the Holy Spirit, âTHE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, âSIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEETâ [Psalm 110:1].â David himself calls Him âLordâ; so in what sense is He his son?â And the large crowd enjoyed listening to Himâ (Mark 12:28-37, NASU).
âBut when the Pharisees heard that Yeshua had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together. One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, âTeacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?â And He said to him, ââYOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MINDâ [Deuteronomy 6:5]. This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, âYOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELFâ [Leviticus 19:18]. On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets. Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Yeshua asked them a question: âWhat do you think about the Messiah, whose son is He?â They said to Him, âThe son of David.â He said to them, âThen how does David in the Spirit call Him âLord,â saying, âTHE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, âSIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEETâ [Psalm 110:1]â? If David then calls Him âLord,â how is He his son?â No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another questionâ (Matthew 22:35-46, NASU).
âThen He said to them, âHow is it that they say the Messiah is Davidâs son? For David himself says in the book of Psalms, âTHE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, âSIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEETââ [Psalm 110:1].â Therefore David calls Him âLord,â and how is He his son?ââ (Luke 20:41-44, NASU).
